By  |

Fashion may come and go, but true style lasts for years. No one know Project Runway’s Tim Gunn whose 2007 book, Tim Gunn’s Guide to Quality, Taste and Style is still widely referenced in the fashion world today. With the weekend fast approaching–only six more hours til the clock hits 5 p.m. on the west coast–we thought we’d share Gunn’s top 10 wardrobe essentials. Ladies, If you don’t have these pieces in your closet, you might want to do a little shopping this weekend.

Tim Gunn’s 10 essential items every woman needs

Basic black dress: No one does the LBD better than Herve Leger and his bandage dresses. Check out his latest creations here.
Trench coat: Burberry, obvi!
Classic dress pants: A pair of Theory pants are perfect for any wear-to-work ensemble. If you’re looking for something a bit less expensive, Express, The Limited and Banana Republic have a number of great options!
Classic white shirt: This MICHAEL Michael Kors zip front shirt is a nice summery alternative to the traditional button down.
Skirt: We’re currently crushing on the BB Dakota Camilla Skirt, but you can’t go wrong with a simple black or navy pencil skirt.
Blazer: A standard black blazer is a must, but if you’ve got that covered, why not pick up one of these more colorful options?
Day dress: Banana Republic has the affordable day dress covered, in our opinion. Check out their most popular spring dresses here.
Cashmere sweater- Does it get any better than The Cashmere Shop at JCrew?
Jeans: Denim is living proof that you really do get what you pay for. Spend, don’t save on jeans and get a pair that fits you like a glove. 7 for all Mankind, Paige and Current/Elliott are our personal faves.
A comfortable alternative to a sweatsuit: Why not try pairing super soft flare pant (black is the best color), t-shirt and open front cardigan? If you’re look for something a bit dressier, swap the pants for a cotton maxi skirt. Anything from Splendid should fit the bill.
